The Virginia City Interior - Charles Clegg Stateroom

Mr. Clegg's room is a mirror image of Mr. Beebe's in almost every respect. However, there are a number of subtle differences that make this room uniquely his. For starters, Mr. Clegg's bed is situated so that the head is just about at close as you can get to the center of the car. This afforded him a good nights' sleep because it also happens to be the most stable place on the car!

In many ways, Charles Clegg was far ahead of his time. His interest in electronics and communication is clearly reflected in the car, and he made his bedroom communications central. In addition to having a button for ringing the car's attendants (situated between the two windows in each of the three bedrooms), a telephone set was available in the upper berth in his room. Additionally, he also had the ability to communicate with the staff even when seated in his bathroom, as there is also a telephone situated next to his toilet!

The Clegg Stateroom also houses the car's water heater in one of the closets. Beyond that, the remaining closet and drawers afford travelers with plenty of space to store their clothing. While extremely modest when compared with your own dresser and closet at home, it is at least comparable to a luxury suite on a cruise ship.

Oh, one last word about Charles Clegg's stateroom and we can move on. It's haunted! Yes, Charles still hangs out on the car and when there is no logical explanation for things gone awry, you can bet that Chuck is at the heart of it! This particularly relates to things electrical -- light bulbs have a way of liberating themselves from their sockets -- without human assistance! Shades have a way of lifting up, also without human assistance and always at an inconvenient time! We have come to appreciate these little anomalies, and are always reminded of what a jokester Mr. Clegg was purported to be. He certainly doesn't let a small thing like death get in his way when he wants to have a little fun!

And on that note, shall we continue on to the Dining Room?
